Even moderate or occasional drinking can have immediate effects on your kidneys. These short-term effects may not seem alarming at first, but they can pave the way for more serious issues if they become habitual.

Can alcohol cause kidney stones?

Still, if you’ve ever woken up after drinking with pain in your back or side, it might surprise you to learn that your kidneys could be the source of your discomfort. • Excessive or even moderate drinking has been considered a potential aggravator of back pain for some individuals.
  • The kidneys can filter small amounts of alcohol, but too much can impair their function of purifying alcohol from the blood.
  • Even a single night of heavy drinking can trigger kidney discomfort after drinking alcohol, especially if dehydration is severe.

Another condition that can cause pain after alcohol consumption is pancreatitis. This condition occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed, often due to heavy alcohol consumption. Pancreatitis typically presents with severe abdominal pain that may radiate to the back. Pancreatitis is does drinking alcohol affect your kidneys a medical emergency and requires immediate medical attention.

  • Drinks that are high in sugar can lead to diabetes and those with lots of salt or caffeine can cause dehydration, both of which can lead to kidney damage over time.
  • Dehydrated muscles are more prone to inflammation, stiffness, and injury, particularly in the back and other weight-bearing areas.
